Audit quality management software helps accounting firms monitor, measure and improve the quality of their audit engagements across the audit lifecycle. It replaces periodic file reviews with continuous, risk-based oversight of engagement performance, root cause analysis and remediation.

For UK firms, this is not optional. ISQM (UK) 1 requires a monitored system of quality management, and the FRC and ICAEW increasingly inspect whether that system operates in practice, not just on paper.

Meeting that requirement comes down to four things:

  • What ISQM (UK) 1 actually demands
  • The specific capabilities audit quality management software needs to support it
  • The mistakes that most often trip up firms at inspection
  • The criteria that separate a genuine audit quality management system from a generic reporting tool

What is ISQM (UK) 1?

ISQM (UK) 1 is the UK-endorsed version of the International Standard on Quality Management 1, effective for UK firms from 15 December 2022. It replaced ISQC 1, the previous quality control standard, with a fundamentally different requirement: firms must design and operate a system of quality management, not just document quality control policies and test them periodically.

The system is built around eight components, including:

  • Governance and leadership
  • Risk assessment
  • Engagement performance
  • Monitoring and remediation

This is why the standard requires audit quality management software: a system of this scope cannot be run from static documents.

ISQM (UK) 1's continuous monitoring requirement

The standard does not allow a firm to design its system once and file it away. Firms must identify quality risks specific to their practice, design responses to those risks, and then monitor whether the responses are actually working, with at least an annual evaluation of the system as a whole.

A quality risk that is identified but never monitored does not satisfy ISQM (UK) 1. This ongoing monitoring, not the policy documents behind it, is what audit quality management software is built to run. Firms can review the full requirement-by-requirement breakdown in Ideagen's ISQM 1 compliance mapping

What FRC and ICAEW inspections check for

The FRC's Audit Quality Review (AQR) team and ICAEW's Quality Assurance Department (QAD) increasingly test for evidence of ongoing monitoring, not just a well-written policy document. Software that logs monitoring activity as it happens gives firms that evidence on demand, instead of reconstructing it under inspection pressure.

Key features of audit quality management software

A system of quality management under ISQM (UK) 1 generates a constant stream of evidence: risk assessments, monitoring activity, deficiency findings and remediation plans, across every office and engagement. Spreadsheets do not scale to this.

Ideagen's audit quality management solution centralises the monitoring cycle instead, automating SoQM documentation and continuous monitoring. The table below maps the standard's core components to the specific capability the software needs to support them.

ISQM (UK) 1 component What the standard requires Software capability needed
Firm's risk assessment process Identification and assessment of quality risks specific to the firm's circumstances Configurable risk registers linked to engagement types and office structure
Engagement performance Consistent execution of audit engagements to a defined quality standard Real-time engagement monitoring dashboards tracking deadlines, review status and escalations
Engagement quality control review Independent review of higher-risk engagements before opinion sign-off Structured EQCR workflow with sign-off tracking and evidence capture
Monitoring and remediation Ongoing evaluation of whether quality responses are operating effectively, with root cause analysis of deficiencies Automated tracking of audit quality indicators (AQIs) with root cause and remediation workflows
Information and communication Timely, relevant reporting to those who need it, internally and to regulators Configurable reporting aligned to FRC AQR and ICAEW QAD submission formats

What are audit quality indicators (AQIs)?

Audit quality indicators are the metrics a firm defines to quantify engagement quality, such as:

  • Partner and manager hours relative to risk profile
  • Review note volume and severity
  • Restatement and re-performance rates

AQIs only work if they are tracked consistently and linked back to specific engagements. This becomes a data management task rather than a spreadsheet task once a firm operates across more than a handful of offices.

Engagement quality control (EQCR) workflows

Engagement quality control reviews require independent sign-off on higher-risk engagements before an opinion is issued. Audit quality management software structures this workflow, capturing reviewer sign-off, evidence and escalation in one auditable record instead of email threads and shared drives.

Common ISQM (UK) 1 compliance mistakes UK firms make

A system of quality management under ISQM (UK) 1 is an operating model, not a policy document. The most common inspection failures share one root cause: treating it as documentation rather than practice. Firms fail on the same points repeatedly:

  • Risks identified but never monitored. A risk register exists, but there is no evidence it was checked during the year.
  • No root cause analysis. Deficiencies found in engagement reviews are logged but never traced back to a systemic cause.
  • Remediation plans that stay as intentions. Actions are proposed but never tracked to close-out.

Audit quality management software closes this gap. It makes monitoring the default state of the system, not an annual retrospective exercise, within Ideagen's connected governance platform for audit, accounting and advisory firms

How to choose audit quality management software

UK firms evaluating vendors in this category should assess the following criteria against their own practice structure.

Integration with existing audit methodology

The software should connect to the firm's audit management system and engagement files rather than operate as a disconnected reporting layer.

Scalability across the office network

A system built for a single office will not necessarily hold up across a multi-office or multi-jurisdiction network.

Regulatory reporting alignment

Reporting outputs should map directly to the formats the FRC AQR team and ICAEW QAD expect during inspection.

Configurability of AQI definitions

Firms need to define their own audit quality indicators and thresholds rather than accept a fixed, generic set.

Audit trail integrity

Records of monitoring activity, findings and remediation need to be immutable and time-stamped to withstand inspection scrutiny.

Audit quality management system: from policy to continuous practice

ISQM (UK) 1 reframed audit quality from an annual demonstration into a continuous operating discipline. UK firms that build their audit quality management system on software, rather than static documentation, are better positioned for both FRC and ICAEW inspection and for the outcome the standard exists to protect: consistently reliable audit opinions.

Ideagen's Audit Quality product is built specifically for this operating model. It tracks engagement performance, audit quality indicators and remediation activity against ISQM (UK) 1's requirements across every office a firm operates in.
