The gap between reactive and proactive safety management
Ask any EHS leader whether they'd rather prevent an incident or respond to one and the answer is obvious. Ask how their program spends its time and it gets complicated. Ideagen and EHSLeaders surveyed 112 EHS professionals in 2026 to find out where teams really stand: 83% describe their program as reactive or still transitioning toward proactive.

The problem with spending more time recording risk than reducing it
This survey covers 112 EHS professionals and four gaps that keep teams reactive:
- Program maturity: only 17% call their safety program proactive today
- Day-to-day challenge: admin work is the most-cited issue, ahead of seven other options
- Time: 34% spend more than half their time on routine admin
- Data confidence: only 16% are very confident their EHS data is accurate and complete
