Among the Big Four, KPMG LLP led with 8 engagements and 2 departures for a net of +6. Across all auditors, 160 new engagements and 175 departures were filed during the quarter.

Among the Big Four, the quarter split two and two. KPMG LLP was the clear gainer, adding 8 engagements against just 2 departures for a net of six, and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP also edged ahead at 6 engagements to 5 departures, a net of one. Ernst & Young LLP and Deloitte & Touche LLP moved the other way, EY at 5 engagements against 9 departures for a net of -4 and Deloitte at 4 against 12 for a net of -8. Taken together, the Big Four booked 23 new engagements against 28 departures, a net loss of 5 clients. That churn stayed largely within the top tier: 43% of the 23 engagements came from other Big Four firms and another 43% from global and national firms, while of the 28 departures, 39% went to other Big Four firms and 43% to global and national firms.

The global and national firms told a similar story, with one firm ahead and the rest slipping. Grant Thornton LLP was the lone net gainer at 11 engagements to 8 departures, a net of three, and RSM US LLP held even at 2 and 2. BDO USA PC (5 engagements, 6 departures) and Forvis Mazars LLP (1 and 2) each finished down one, CBIZ CPAs PC was off by four on 6 engagements against 10 departures, and Baker Tilly US LLP saw the widest gap, 2 engagements against 7 departures for a net of -5.
