Ideagen is backing a UK-wide movement designed to encourage more women into the technology industry.

The Nottingham-based company, which has several sites across the UK as well as the US, Dubai, Bulgaria and Kuala Lumpur, has teamed up with several organisations for the Women In Tech campaign.

Currently, one in six technology specialists in the UK are female, while one in ten are IT leaders. Despite the industry growing rapidly in the last decade, female representation in the technology sector has stalled and only 7% of students taking part in computer science A-level courses are women.

Now Ideagen is working alongside the likes of ITN, Public Health England, Civil Service Fast Stream and First Utility to change the industry and encourage more women into tech.

Hannah Hughes, Recruitment & Resourcing Advisor at Ideagen (pictured right), is leading the initiative for the company.

She said: “The number of working women in technology is significantly lower than most other UK work sectors. Just 17% of those working in Technology in the UK are female.

“As a leading software and technology organisation, not just in the UK but globally, we are aiming to change that. We will be working alongside Women in Tech and other organisations such as ITN and Public Health England to promote technology careers with Ideagen and encourage aspiring women into the industry.

“As part of this, we will be actively promoting the success stories of our own talented female workforce and in turn helping to encourage more females into the industry. This project will be a positive for the technology industry, not just in the UK but globally.”

Barnaby Kent, Ideagen’s Chief Operating Officer, said he was delighted to support the initiative. He added: “This is a great initiative and we are absolutely behind the campaign to encourage more and more females into the technology sector.

“As an organisation, we have grown rapidly in the last decade due to the talent, hard work and ambition of our staff – many of which are female.

“So we are delighted to fully support this great initiative and we hope to play a huge part in changing the future of the technology industry for the better.”

A spokeswomen for Women In Tech added: “We think it is extremely important for companies to be actively targeting females and acting upon the demand for women in the tech sector. We think this project is a great way to encourage and support women to join the tech sector. Promoting success stories is also incredibly beneficial for those on the fence as to whether joining the tech sector is a good idea for them or not.”
